EPP congratulates UK coalition government; Brown’s departure has weakened European Socialists

The European People’s Party (EPP) congratulated today the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government, which was announced last night by the new British Prime Minister David Cameron.

EPP President Wilfried Martens made the following statement:

“I congratulate David Cameron for becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and welcome his Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government. I expect that this will be a pragmatic government, which will respect and implement the European treaties; in this case, David Cameron’s government could work well on the European level alongside the 14 EPP-led governments of the European Union.”

EPP Secretary General Antonio López-Istúriz added:

“I wish Prime Minister David Cameron and his new coalition government success. I am also very pleased with the fact that after the Socialist defeat in Hungary, the defeat of Labour and the departure of Gordon Brown have significantly weakened the Party of European Socialists.”
